AVIF vs JPG: what changes

AVIF is a newer format from the Alliance for Open Media, built on the AV1 video codec, and it often stores a photo in around half the space of a comparable JPG. The catch is support: many desktop viewers, office programs and upload forms still refuse .avif files, while JPG works practically everywhere.

The JPG is encoded at 92% quality, which keeps photos close to how the AVIF looks, but it will usually be considerably larger. JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are painted white, and an animated AVIF becomes a still of its first frame.

How to convert AVIF to JPG on any device

  • When an AVIF will not open

Double-clicking a .avif file on an older computer often opens nothing useful. Drop it on this page instead and you get a JPG that every photo viewer understands.

  • Downloaded product and stock images

Online stores and image CDNs increasingly serve AVIF, so Save image as can hand you a .avif file. Drop one file for a direct download, or several for a single ZIP.

  • Phones and tablets

Tap Choose images and pick the AVIF from Files or Downloads. Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS 16 or later both read the format, and the JPG lands in your usual downloads location.

Troubleshooting AVIF to JPG

  • The page says my browser can't open AVIF images

You see this when the browser has no AVIF decoder. Support arrived in Chrome 85, Firefox 93, Edge 121 and Safari 16 (on macOS Ventura or iOS 16 and later), so updating the browser or the operating system fixes it.

  • The JPG is several times bigger than the AVIF

AVIF is among the most efficient image formats, and JPG at 92% quality cannot match it. A bigger file is the price of compatibility, not a sign that something went wrong.

  • Cut-out areas are now solid white

JPG cannot store an alpha channel, so transparent AVIF pixels are filled with white. Choose the AVIF to PNG converter to keep them see-through.

Color profile and metadata

Camera and editing metadata stored in the AVIF, such as EXIF and XMP fields, is not copied. The converter draws through your browser's 8-bit sRGB canvas, so HDR highlights and wide-gamut colors are mapped to standard range and the JPG can look flatter than the original on an HDR display. Rotation and mirroring stored in the file are applied, so the JPG is the right way round in any app.
