PNG vs WebP: what changes
For logos, icons and interface graphics with transparency, WebP is a direct upgrade: it keeps the alpha channel and is usually much lighter than the PNG. Google's published tests found lossless WebP about 26 percent smaller than PNG, and lossy WebP can save more.
This converter writes lossy WebP at 92% quality, not lossless. Photos and gradients look the same to most eyes, but one-pixel lines, pixel art and tiny text can pick up faint softness along their edges. For pixel-perfect assets, keep the PNG.
How to convert PNG to WebP on any device
Web developers
Swap your PNG assets for the converted WebP files. If you must support very old browsers, serve them in a picture element with the PNG as the fallback.
Design handoff
Export your interface assets as PNG, drop the folder here and use the ZIP. File names are preserved with a .webp extension, so existing references only need the new suffix.
On a phone
Choose images allows selecting many files from your gallery or Files app in one go, and the batch finishes as a single download.
Troubleshooting PNG to WebP
The edges of my icon look soft
Lossy compression can blur hard edges slightly. Keep the PNG for pixel art and icons that need razor-sharp lines.
The WebP is bigger than the PNG
Small, flat-color graphics compress extremely well as PNG. If a file grows, keep the original for that one.
Transparency looks wrong in some app
A few older programs ignore the alpha channel in WebP and show a solid background. Test in the place you will use the image, and fall back to the PNG if needed.
Color profile and metadata
The WebP contains pixels only. Text chunks and any embedded color profile in the PNG are not copied, and colors are rendered in sRGB. Partially transparent pixels, such as soft shadows, keep their transparency.
